QUETTA, Sept 20: The All Pakistan Professors and Lecturers Association has condemned the Balochistan government’s decision to appoint lecturers in colleges on contract basis, instead of selection by the Public Service Commission.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, APPLA leader Prof Siraj Ahmed Kakar said the association would resist privatisation of educational institutions.
He said appointment of lecturers on contract basis was against the rule of merit and would promote favouritism.
He alleged that the provincial government’s decision was aimed at making recruitment on political basis.
Mr Kakar demanded withdrawal of the decision and said recruitment of teaching staff in colleges should be carried out through the Public Service Commission.
He criticised the Sindh government for banning teachers’ associations and said at violated Articles 16,17, 18 and 25 of the Constitution.
He condemned use of batons and tear gas against about 8,000 teachers who had assembled in Karachi on Aug 22. He said the police officers involved in the action should be punished.
