Kaneria saddened by Trophy snub

LONDON, Sept 12: Pakistan’s talented leg-spinner Danish Kaneria said on Tuesday he would have captured at least 20 wickets in the recent Test series against England had luck gone his way.

“I feel I bowled quite well in the Test series in England and picked up 13 wickets, which could easily have been 20 if luck went my way,” said Kaneria in a post series interview here.

Kaneria, who failed to find a place in the squad for Champions Trophy, said he was disappointed at the snub from the selectors.

“The England tour has ended on a disappointing note for not only the team but also for me as I was not picked for the Trophy,” said the lanky spinner.

“Although I missed out on the one-day matches in England, I was hoping things would be different for me in India. I bowled well in those conditions last year and I was optimistic that my performances there would have been taken into account for the Champions Trophy.”

Kaneria, who plays for Essex in the English County Championship, said he was determined to make a comeback soon. “ I am a very ambitious cricketer and I will be working even harder at my game, keeping myself fit and preparing for the next series.”

“I am desperate to play a part in the World Cup where I think I can be a threat on West Indian strips. I bowled quite well there on our tour last year.

Kaneria admitted that fatigue and homesickness really got to the Pakistan players at the end of the England tour. “The end-of-tour feeling was of tiredness around the camp in the last few days as the guys started to think about home.”—Agencies
