LAHORE, Feb 12: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has constituted a special task force, to be headed by Maj-Gen M H Ansari (retired), to examine the infamous Taj Company scam, and find a way to pay back the lost money of its depositors.

This was stated by provincial NAB DPGA Ahmer Bilal Soofi, who appeared before Company Judge Justice Jawwad Khwaja. He was representing the task force chairman.

Mr Soofi said the NAB would present a plan of returning the deposits to the victims of the scam after ascertaining in detail all aspects (of the case). In this regard, he stated, preliminary assessment was being made.

He informed the judge that the NAB chairman had constituted the special task force to resolve the plight of the affectees who were suffering for the last one decade.

In this regard, he said, the NAB was successfully carrying out a phased plan of returning the deposits to the affectees of the cooperative scam. “The NAB would thus want to replicate a similar model of repayments to the affectees in the case of Taj Company,” he added. He said in any case the NAB placed its resources and expertize at the disposal of the court to assist it in minimizing the agony of the depositors.

The judge directed the DPGA to submit a plan. He also observed that the proposal of reviving the company presented by one group of affectees may be continued to be considered since it would not prejudice any plan to be submitted by the NAB which shall be examined when presented.

The court shall now hear the matter following Tuesday on the nature of order that needed to be passed in the light of all the developments.
