ISLAMABAD, Aug 31: Chief of Pakistan Muslim League (N) Nawaz Sharif has appealed the people to support the opposition’s call for general strike on Friday to protest against the killing of Akbar Bugti and to express solidarity with the people of Baluchistan.

In a statement issued here, the former prime minister said: “The ever changing versions of the government about the tragic incident were proof of the fact that the government was hiding facts.”

Mr Sharif said people can not be subjugated by bullets because violence breeds violence. Pakistan is a federation, which would be strengthened only when all the four units have equal ownership and participation.

“Those rulers who usurp power by the barrel of gun always seek solution of all problems through force and violent means whereas in a democratic process even the most complex problems are resolved through dialogue and understanding,” he said.

Accusing the government he said: “The policies of Musharraf regime have shattered the internal harmony of Pakistan. Before 12th October, 1999 all national and regional parties were in the mainstream of politics but unfortunately in the last seven years our internal unity has suffered adversely and misunderstandings among provinces have grown.

“Today Pakistan stands at crossroads. If the agenda of undemocratic forces is not checked then our future is at stake and the country will plunge into a serious crisis of trust. If we succeed in making 160 million people of Pakistan real rulers of the land by restoring genuine democracy then Pakistan will become secure, strong, and a progressive nation,” he added.
