UNITED NATIONS, Aug 31: The United Nations Security Council on Thursday voted in favour of creating a UN peace force for Sudan’s Darfur region. The resolution passed by the council says that such a force would be deployed only with the consent of Sudan.
The Sudanese representative boycotted the council session as Khartoum opposes plans for a UN force on its territory. Twelve countries voted for the resolution while none voted against. China, Russia and Qatar abstained. China and Russia called for obtaining Sudan’s contents before putting the resolution to vote.
