MIRPURKHAS, Aug 23: Army personnel succeeded in plugging all the big and small breaches in the Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) and other small drains connected to it near the Tando Adam Road in Hussain Bux Mari taluka on Wednesday.
A military official told Dawn that they used heavy machinery to fill in the breaches and remove hurdles which impeded the flow of water in the LBOD. About 450 army troops were taking part in the relief operation to save villages from further inundation, he added.
The pace of work gathered momentum after intermittent rains stopped after 60 hours in the morning.
Three small breaches in LBOD near Sindhri had flooded about 15 villages including Haji Raham Ali Shar and Anwar Ali Shar.
Mirpurkhas Sugar Mill’s residential colony is still inundated while several localities of Digri town are submerged in two to three feet rainwater and irrigation water from the breach in Dumbalo Shakh.
District emergency cell said that the district had set up relief camps in 40 school buildings and arranged 20 water-pumping machines to drain out stagnant water.
District Nazim Dr Sughra Junejo paid visits to several relief camps and inspected food and other facilities being provided to the affected people.
