KARACHI, Aug 20: Flood water in the Orangi-Banaras stream has caused damages to commercial, residential and state-owned buildings.
A wall of the government girls primary school in Frontier Colony No 1 was washed away and flood water entered in classrooms. The building structure was severely damaged and cracks appeared at a number of spots on the walls.
Besides, the flood water also washed away portions of residential quarters, located along the stream damaging households. A number of residents were shifted to safer places.
Area residents demanded that protective walls should be constructed on both sides of the stream. They claimed that they had time and again raised their voice for construction of the protective walls, but the successive governments had never paid heed towards their problems.
They said that people, particularly women and children, suffered while shifting their households to safer places, as water had entered into their houses during the last week torrential rains.
It was pointed out that the height of the bridges, which had been constructed on the stream, was very low and in case of floods the water flows over the bridges.
