KARACHI, Feb 11: An additional district and sessions judge, Central, Ghulam Qadir Leghari, issued on Monday non-bailable warrants for the arrest of a DSP who had not been appearing in the court despite several notices.

The DSP, Ali Yar Khan, was required by the court for his evidence in a robbery case, registered in 1996 by the New Karachi police against accused Nasim.

The judge also ordered the police department to withhold the salary of the police officer. The judge fixed March 8 for the hearing of the case and ordered the DSP to be present in the court on the next date.

ACQUITTED: Another additional district and sessions judge, Central, Riaz Ahmed Shaikh, acquitted a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in a murder case.

Mohammed Obaid alias Obaid Kaytoo, booked in the case by the Gulbahar police in 2000, was acquitted for want of incriminating evidence.

CONVICTED: The Federal Anti-corruption Court, headed by Judge Munir Ahmed Khawaja, sentenced a Bengali-speaking man to two years’ rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs4,000 for obtaining a fake national identity card.

The judge convicted Abdur Rauf after he confessed to have obtained a fake NIC through an agent. The convict would have to undergo an additional eight months’ RI in case of default on payment of fine.

The judge, however, acquitted an assistant of the NIC department, Naseer Ahmed, of the charge of issuing the fake NIC to the alien.

DRUG TRAFFICKERS: The special anti-narcotics court, headed by Judge Ali Nawaz Pirzada, convicted two drug traffickers and awarded them different terms of rigorous imprisonment.

Saifur Rahman, arrested on Sept 23 last year in Chakiwara, was sentenced to three years’ RI for possessing half kg charas.

The judge also fined him Rs10,000, who would have to undergo an additional six months’ RI if he failed to pay the fine.

Mohammed Sabir, arrested on April 16 last year by the Supermarket police, was sentenced to 18 months’ RI. The accused had been booked on July 1, 1999, after he fled leaving behind 250 grams of charas.
