KARACHI, Aug 8: A delegation of Pakistan People’s Party, led by Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro, called on the provincial election commissioner, Ch Qamar-uz-Zaman, at his office on Tuesday and apprised him of the alleged irregularities in registration of voters for the next general elections.

Nisar Khuhro informed the election commissioner that at various places in the province, election commission staff was performing their responsibilities on the directives of Muttahida Qaumi Movement office-bearers.

“Genuine voters are not being enlisted, and even several PPP leaders have not been enlisted,” he said and alleged that in several areas, bogus entries were being made in the voters lists.

PPP leaders Rashid Rabbani and Saeed Ghani demanded of the election commissioner to hold an inquiry into their allegations and said if new voters lists were prepared in such a flawed manner, next general elections would become controversial before their holding and would have no legitimacy.

“In order to hold free, fair and transparent elections, the ECP should take immediate measures to check irregularities in registration of new voters.

Provincial Election Commissioner Ch. Qamar-uz-Zaman assured the PPP delegations that steps would be taken to remove their grievances as early as possible.

“If any official of the election commission office is found involved in any irregularity, he will be dealt with severely” he assured.

Other members of the delegation included Rafique Engineer, Afaq Shahid, Farzana Baloch, Anwar Lal Dean and others.

PPP demand: The Pakistan Peoples Party Sindh on Tuesday condemned the Sindh education department for issuing ''illegal'' offer letters to 300 persons for recruitment as teachers whose names were not in the merit list.

In a statement issued here, PPP deputy secretary information Sindh Waqar Mehdi termed the education department's issuance of offer letters to irrelevant persons as ''illegal act and murder of merit''.

He alleged that the education department had sought applications for teachers' recruitment some two years back, adding through these applications, it generated millions of rupees.

The education department spent this amount in making marries and bought luxurious vehicles for its officials, he charged.

The PPP leader said that the education department had still yet provided jobs to the candidates, adding Sindh Chief Minister and former education minister Irfanullah Marwat had recruited people of their choice, depriving eligible the candidates of their right to become government servants.

PPP leader prayed to the Sindh High Court to take suo moto action.—PPI
