ISLAMABAD, Aug 6: The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) on Sunday advised the Sindh government to take precautionary measures ahead of an expected ‘very high flood’ that would hit Guddu barrage on Aug 11-12.

A senior official told Dawn that river flows downstream Chashma barrage were rising and a very high flood of between 650,000-750,000 cusec would cross Guddu barrage on Aug 11.

At present, a low flood situation was prevailing at Guddu barrage with inflows of about 318,969 cusec and outflows of 300,454 cusec and was rising towards a high situation.

At Chashma, discharges upstream were recorded at 547,276 cusec on Sunday evening against downstream discharge of 543,076 cusec. Areas downstream Guddu would come under threat after Aug 12 and would need a high level of alertness, he said.

Total inflows in Tarbela dam amounted to 424,000 cusec on Sunday evening against an outflow of 355,600 cusec.

The official said the pressure on areas upstream Chashma barrage had started to subside as a result of decline in flows after a break in heavy downpour that ravaged many parts of the country over the weekend.

He said total water flows at rim station were recorded at 672,104 cusec compared with discharge downstream rim station of 781,846.

FFC sources said Chashma barrage was facing a high flood situation on Sunday and the flood situation at Taunsa barrage was increasing from high to ‘very high’. The heavy flood that would touch Guddu on Aug 11-12 was expected to hit Sukkur barrage in another two-three days and reach Kotri barrage by Aug 22-23, they added.

River Jhelum and Chenab flows were showing wide fluctuations and varied from time to time. However, the flow in Chenab at Marala was recorded at 157,845 cusec on Sunday evening and stood at 139,713 cusec downstream.

Kabul river had also declined to about 133,500 cusec on Sunday evening after touching 169,000 in the day when it inundated the Nowshera-Charsadda road for more than two hours.
