LAHORE, Feb 10: The long-shot Royal Soul spreadeagled the field of top fillies to win the 1000 Guineas Of Pakistan 2002 race run over a mile at the Lahore Racecourse Sunday.

The 1000 Guineas Of Pakistan is a term race for four-year-old fillies and was keenly contested by 10 fillies.

The four-year-old bay Royal Soul gave riding boy Qamar Zaman an opportunity to gain his “dream” victory over Dizzy Height by half-a-length. Gambling Girl finished third four-and-a-quarter lengths further behind, while fancied Cisco Magic ran a disappointing fourth, another one-and-a-quarter lengths back.

Royal Soul took a flying start as the starting gates sprung open and continued to draw away from the pack of runners following her.

At one stage, Cisco Magic tried to catch up the front runners but soon fell back to ninth spot.

In the meantime, the other contestants gained a commanding lead. However, Cisco Magic under leading jockey Shahid Rehman, in a late but desperate bid, tried to close ranks with the leaders. But by that time it was all over bar shouting.

After the race, Shahid Rehman attributed his defeat to rough riding by three jockeys namely, Salah-ud-Din (II), Khurrum Sheikh and Aamar Parvez.

Cisco Magic is owned by former Olympian hockey star Munir Ahmad Dar. And if the horses belonging to him are subjected to such treatment, one can imagine what can be the fate of horses owned by “smaller fries”

The LRC steward Malik Hamid Ali Noon gave away the 1000 Guineas Of Pakistan Cup to Makhdoom Ali Raza and a cash prize of two lakh rupees (Rs 200,000).

The owner of the filly claiming second spot got a prize of Rs 66600 and the third spot winner got Rs 33,300.

A race earlier, the three-year-old chestnut filly Sweet Touch, a raider from Karachi, won the Anarkali Cup run over the sprinting distance of six furlongs.

The victory of Sweet Touch was particularly overwhelming for jockey Shahid Rehman, who registered his second successive win in this cup race.

He had won the same race on Princess Rukhtas last year. This brilliant daughter of My Noble Lord out-of-Willing Shoes, Sweet Touch beat Lahore’s top filly Democracy by five lengths. Qaswa Princess finished third after being nosed out by Democracy while Red Storm completed the frame, another three-and-half lengths behind.

Riding boy Qamar Zaman ended the day in a blaze of glory, winning the I000 Guineas Of Pakistan on Royal Soul and the sixth and last event of the day partnering Mon Soon. Both of his mounts were available at long odds.
