HYDERABAD, Feb 10: Noted scholar and historian Dr Mubarak Ali has said that far bigger tragedies than the Sept 11 incident had taken place in the world but America, due to its control over the modern technology and international media, had portrayed the 9/11 incident as the biggest tragedy of the world.
He was delivering a lecture on the topic of Afghanistan, fundamentalism and the prevailing situation jointly organised by Sindh Organisation for Awareness, Creativity and Humanity (SOACH), Fiction House, Lahore, and Hyderabad Press Club here on Sunday.
Dr Mubarak quoted the examples of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Vietnam where millions of innocent people had been massacred by America.
He said that America was the greatest violator of human rights and added that by taking over the natural resources of other countries it was trying to enslave them.
He added that multinational companies were posing a great threat to the world and were creating gulf between the people and the governments to protect their interests.
He said that America was posing as the great champion of peace but it had allocated huge funds for defence.
Dr. Ali said that America could attack any country which posed a threat to Israel and added that it was a strange paradox that Palestinians, who were struggling for their independence, were being branded terrorists and Israel, which had unleashed bombardment against the Palestinian people, was being portrayed as an oppressed country.
Referring to fundamentalism, he said that some liberal forces had endorsed the steps taken by the government against fundamentalists but the basic issue was whether the present government was a constitutional government or not.
He said that the Jihadi groups alone were not responsible for the killings and arrests of Pakistanis in Afghanistan and rulers were also equally responsible.
He was of the opinion that only political parties and intellectuals could bring about changes in the system.
Dr Mubarak traced the history of the religious schools in the sub-continent and opined that famous Deoband institution had also come into being to struggle against modernism which was introduced by the British rulers.
He said that Shah Shuja was made the ruler of Afghanistan by the Britishers in a similar manner as Hamid Karazai had been made ruler of that country.
Hameed Anjum, Momin Khan, Zahoor Ahmed Khan of Fiction House and others accompanied Dr Mubarak Ali.
