ISLAMABAD, July 20: Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday demanded cessation of Israel aggression and bombardment of Lebanon.

In a unanimously adopted resolution the committee urged Pakistan and other countries to immediately dispatch humanitarian supplies to Lebanon and call an emergency meeting of OIC Foreign Ministers, plus interact with important Western capitals like Washington, London and Brussels.

Earlier, speaking at special public hearing of the committee on “crisis in Lebanon” at the Parliament House the committee chairman Mushahid Hussain urged the Muslim world to show spine on the issue of Israeli aggression and demonstrate solidarity with Lebanon.

The senator termed Israeli aggression, which resulted in over 300 civilian deaths during the last 10 days, a violation of international law and UN charter, and said no state could justify waging war against civilians and infrastructure of any other country.

The public hearing, which lasted for over two hours, was attended by a large number of mediapersons, and the committee heard testimony of various analysts and experts.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed deplored the double standards of the international community, more so, when Israel was applying the “might is right” approach against two Arab states and Muslim countries—Lebanon and Palestine—which are democracies with popularly elected governments.

He regretted the apathy and inability of the Muslim Ummah to translate its economic affluence into political influence.

Chairman Senate Committee on Foreign Relations said on the question of Lebanon and Palestine, Pakistani people, parliament, political parties and the government were speaking with one voice. He said that Israel was setting a dangerous precedent which could be used by others as well and instead of the rule of law, the law of jungle would prevail.

The meeting was addressed, on special invitation, by Lt. Gen. (R) Talat Masud, Ambassador (R) Javed Hussain, Agha Murtaza Poya, Dr. Shirin Mizari and Farrukh Sohail Goindi. Senior officials of the foreign Office were also present.

The meeting was also attended by Senator Nisar A. Memon, Senator Mehtab Ahmed Khan and Senator Talha Mehmood.
