GUJRAT, June 28: Members of Gujrat witnessed their first major success against Kairas of Lalamusa when around 48 representatives of Kharian tehsil council did not vote for the budget 2006-7 presented by tehsil nazim Nadeem Asghar Kaira on Wednesday.

Only eight members cast their votes in favour of the budget in a 63-member house.

Seven pro-tehsil nazim members were absent from the session. Preparations had already been completed by PML leaders to flop the budget session.

District nazim Chaudhry Shafaat Husain had convened regular meetings, convincing the house members of the party to unite on one platform and use their vote against the tehsil nazim.

It had been unanimously decided in all the meetings that in the first phase the budget session would be flopped which would be followed by a no-trust motion against Nadeem Kaira.

The tehsil nazim had convened the budget meeting on June 21 but postponed it in a bid to muster support of the elected representatives. Mr Kaira first presented before the house around 18 different contracts of TMA for approval, but 48 PML members did not approve them. Later, the tehsil nazim presented the budget, but the house did not approve it.

Political pundits said the Kairas had faced their first major setback after they entered political field after the death of former MNA Haji Asghar Kaira. After his death, his son Nadeem Asghar Kaira was elected as tehsil nazim twice in 2001 and 2005. His nephew Qamar Zaman Kaira was elected as MNA and a close relative, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, became the MPA.
