ISLAMABAD, June 20: The export of textile products increased by 18.44 per cent to $8.931 billion during the July-May period of the current fiscal year as compared to $7.541 billion in the same period last year.

Federal Bureau of Statistics figures released here on Tuesday showed that the export of textile products rose by 13.22 per cent to $898.640 million in May 2006 as against $793.745 million in the same month last year.

This showed that the share of textile products in total exports increased to 59.69 per cent during the period under review as against 59.22 per cent during the same period last year. However, the share of textile sector exports in total exports did not record that much growth as was expected despite the fact that government has given a blanket tax exemption to the sector.

The product-wise details of textile commodities showed that the export of readymade garments surged by 24.44 per cent to $1.188 billion during the July-May period as compared to $0.955 billion in the same period last year. This growth was achieved because of the six per cent subsidy given to the commodity.

Exports of cotton yarn and cotton cloth rose by 34.68pc and 15.61pc to $1.285 billion and $1.943bn, respectively, during 11 months of the current fiscal as against $0.954bn and $1.681 billion in the same period last year.

Knitwear and bedwear exports had increased by 6.22pc and 45.72pc to $1.564 billion and $1.827 billion, respectively, during the period under review as compared to $1.472 billion and $1.253 billion in the same period last year. The export of towels showed an increase of 13.18 per cent to $533.182 million as against $471.086 million.

However, the export of made-up articles, including other textile, declined by 10.59 per cent to $377.714m during the period under review as against $422.447m in the same period last year; art, silk and synthetic textile down by 33.12pc to $179.658m as against $268.610m, canvas and tarpaulin declined by 48.21 per cent to $32.024m as against $61.836m in the same period last year.
