KARACHI, Feb 8: Police will register FIR of all major crimes such as murder, robbery, carjacking at the doorstep of complainant.

This was decided at a meeting presided over by the IG Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, in the office of the DIG Karachi (Operation) on late Thursday night.

After the meeting, Mr Shah told Dawn that the “15 Madadgar” was being set up in all the Towns to provide relief to the people.

He said complaints, received on 15, would be responded immediately and a police officer not below the rank of inspector or a sub-inspector would visit the residence of the complainant to listen to his complaint and write it down on paper which would be converted into an FIR at the area police station.

“We are taking this step in the interest of the people as it would help remove complaints about non-registration of cases,” he said.

Giving an instance, he said a police officer went to a place following a complaint of car hijacking and asked the complainant about the details of the crime.

The complainant was surprised to see a policeman at his doorstep and asked him if he was posing as a police officer or really police had become so efficient.

It was also decided in the meeting that a community police officer would also be appointed in each of the Towns to address minor problems of the people.

Experience shows that people avoided to inform police of suspicious movements of shady characters or of other unusual happenings, which could lead to a major crime.

The community police officer would establish a liaison between police and the people so that notice could be taken of such happenings.

The IG said his focus was on the prevention of crime, and the DIG Karachi (Operation) had been asked to take necessary measures to curb crime.

He said police faced transport problem and the government might take time to grant funds to buy new vehicles. However, it was decided that police vehicles, lying out of order and needing overhauling, would be repaired to overcome the transport problem.
