KARACHI, June 12: A sense of insecurity prevailed in the Emergency Ward of the Jinnah Hospital on Monday evening when a doctor was beaten up by the attendants of a patient who expired shortly after his arrival for treatment.
Doctors said Aziz, a taxi driver, was referred from the Civil Hospital with a history of internal cerebral haemorrhage, citing shortage of beds.
At around 6:30 in the evening, the patient was admitted to the Emergency Ward of the JPMC. However, soon after his admission the patient died. The attendants got enraged over the expiry of their patient and manhandled the doctor.
The head of the Emergency Ward, Dr Seemin Jamali, expressed her concern over the insecure atmosphere in which doctors were working. According to her, she had managed to avert a strike-like situation by the doctors, but urged the authorities that proper security be provided to the doctors in the Emergency Ward.
ARRESTED: Police have arrested an activist of the Punjabi Students Association and registered an FIR for his resorting to firing in a drunken state in the Emergency Ward of the Jinnah Hospital and wounding an associate of his on Saturday night.
A senior police official of the Clifton town said trouble started when a group of the PSA came to the SMC hostel after getting drunk and started to misbehave with their associates, resulting in a clash in which an activist, Imran, was wounded and was shifted to the Emergency Ward of the Jinnah Hospital.
Police said the drunk men came to the Emergency Ward and resorted to firing in front of the ward.
Following the incident a heavy police party of the Clifton town arrived there and arrested three suspects and arms seized from them.
Police also carried out a search of the SMC hostels. Kamran and Khalid were detained for keeping illegal weapons.
The TPO of Clifton said the detained activists were claiming that they had licences for the weapons. If they produced the licences, they would be freed, he added.
ARRESTED: Police arrested Ali Raza, Mohammad Amin and Amjad for attempting to rob a man who had withdrawn cash from an ATM in North Karachi.
Police said Mohammad Arshad was returning from an MCB ATM in Sector 11-B, North Karachi.
