PESHAWAR, June 8: An officer of the Islamabad police, arrested on the charge of abducting a girl from a shelter house here, was remanded into the custody of the city police for four days by a court on Thursday.

Judicial magistrate Tilla Mohammad directed police to produce the accused assistant sub-inspector Chaudhry Mohammad Ashraf in the court on June 12.

On Thursday, The ASI was produced in the court by the Hashtnagri police station. The All Pakistan Women’s Association’s shelter house (Darul Aman) from where the girl had been kidnapped is located in the jurisdiction of the police station. Police sought custody of ASI Ashraf to complete investigation.

Police have also started proceedings for arresting four other accused nominated in the case.

An officer of the Hashtnagri police told Dawn that they had contacted their seniors for completing the procedure for the arrest of the four persons as they lived in Islamabad which was out of the jurisdiction of the NWFP police.

A two-member bench of the Peshawar High court had on Wednesday ordered the local police to register an FIR against the ASI and four others involved in the abduction of Robeena Zaheen, who had married a man of her choice against the wish of her parents.

The FIR has been registered under section 364 (abduction for purpose of murder), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons arms), 149 (participation in an unlawful assembly) and 109 (abetment in crime) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

ASI Ashraf, who had conducted a raid on the shelter house, Mohammad Zaheen, the father of the girl, her uncle Mohammad Shaheen, cousin Qaiser Khan and relative Munawar have been nominated in the FIR.

Robeena, 19, had left her house in Pind Bhagwal (Islamabad) and married Ghulam Ali here on April 7.

The Bhara Kahu police had registered an FIR against Ghulam Ali and some of his relatives on April 10 under the Offence of Zina (Enforcement of Hudood) Ordinance 1979, charging them with abducting Robeena.

Later, the couple was arrested by police here. Robeena was sent to the shelter house by a local court but her spouse was shifted to Islamabad.

He is still in the Adiala prison and his bail petition has been pending before a court in Islamabad.
