BAHAWALPUR, June 2: A man was killed and several others sustained injuries when a windstorm accompanied by light rain lashed the city and other parts of the district on Friday afternoon.
Businessman Shair Muhammad, carrying mangoes in a pick-up, was killed on the Ahmadpur Road when a speeding trailer hit his vehicle during the windstorm.
The windstorm started at about 5pm and continued for around half an hour. It caused electricity disruption besides uprooting trees.
According to eyewitnesses, several signboards of shops were blown away and some billboards at various squares in the city were damaged. The mud walls of a number of houses collapsed, injuring residents.
According to Wapda officials, many poles were uprooted, while damage to main transmission line near Baghdad campus caused disruption of electricity supply to the entire Satellite Town and around 20 adjacent localities.
The power supply was partially restored after about three hours. However, according to Mepco executive engineer (operation), there were bleak chances of restoration of electricity to Satellite Town and its adjacent localities.
