PORT-OF-SPAIN, May 29: West Indies struck with pace and spin to take the last six wickets for 66 runs and win the fifth and final One-day International against India by 19 runs on Sunday (partly reported in Monday’s edition).

India, chasing West Indies' score of 255 for six, were all out for 236 in 48 overs to hand the hosts their fourth successive victory in the series after India had won the first match.

Opening batsman Virender Sehwag had put India in control with his innings of 95 off 103 deliveries but new-ball bowler Jerome Taylor then returned to the attack with a burst of three for eight in four overs to wrestle the West Indies back into the game.

West Indies captain Brian Lara then turned to spinners Dave Mohammed and Chris Gayle to wrap up the tail and the last three wickets fell for just six runs.

Taylor finished with three for 48, Mohammed took three for 39 and Gayle claimed the final wicket to finish with one for 44 in his 10 overs.

Earlier, a second successive unbeaten half-century by Dwayne Bravo boosted the West Indies after the hosts were sent into bat first by India.

Bravo blazed a career-best 62 not out off just 44 balls as the West Indies scored a daunting 255 for six in their 50 overs on a slow pitch.

Lara, in what he had said before the match he expected to be his final one-day international innings in front of his home crowd, chipped in with 36.

Lara said the team spirit of the hosts had been a telling factor in their triumph.

“You can tell there is a lot of team spirit because the players are really rallying around each other. It's been an all-round team effort and all the players have been pulling their weight.

“I'm sure this was my last ODI here and it's been a great outing. The crowd was magnificent and I'd like to thank the people of Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the Caribbean, I really appreciate their support in what has been a tremendous run for me,” Lara said.

Lara said the limited-overs victory would provide his team with important momentum for the four tests which start in Antigua on Friday.

“The series win has caused our confidence and mental side of the game to improve and we are all looking forward to the Tests.

But we will be working hard because we know India will provide a severe challenge.

“They are great opponents and they have two spinners, Harbhajan and Kumble, who can cause a lot of damage.”

India captain Rahul Dravid said his team had outplayed.

Meanwhile, West Indies named a 14-member squad for the opening Test against India starting on Friday.
