THE monumental struggle of Imam Hussain in the face of sheer tyranny in the desert of Karbala teaches all of us what actual sincerity to one’s beliefs means. He gave his life to the noble cause that was close to his heart and soul. Today, people are willing to make all sorts of compromises for petty gains. Ironically, it is also through Karbala that we can see the perils of one’s lust for worldly benefits and dominance.

The message of Karbala is not for the followers of a particular sect or even a religion, it is universal in its essence. We must ask ourselves while making our choices if we are actually walking in the footsteps of Imam Hussain. The Imam’s martyrdom demands more than mourning; it demands allegiance and transformation.
