EDITORIAL: The Ramazan war exploded the myth of Israel’s military invincibility. The series of financial scandals that recently rocked Israel has shattered another myth — that of the moral superiority of the people who run the affairs of the Zionist State. The recent Rosenbaum-Tsur scandal in particular has exposed Western claims about Israel being the exemplar of political virtues and high morals in State management. …

…[T]he troubles now coming to the surface are traceable to the manner in which Israel was born and the techniques it employs to ensure its survival. Israel is founded on the grabbing of land and property belonging to others, on mass eviction of the original inhabitants of the country and on the widespread use of violence and terror against Arabs as an instrument of State policy. … When moral values and proprieties of civilised existence become expendable on such a large scale, as they have been during the 27 years of Israel’s existence, the phenomenon cannot but exercise a corruptive influence on the character of the people itself. The results are now becoming visible in the psychology of violence, moral laxity and tensions in inter-communal relations within Israel.
