LOWER DIR: A series of wildfires in Lower Dir have destroyed large swathes of forests over the past few days, prompting forest owners and officials to suspect arson and demand immediate action against those responsible.

Community leaders from Talash told reporters on Friday that the pattern and frequency of the fires suggested deliberate attempts to damage forests, wildlife, and the environment. They called on authorities to use modern technology to trace the culprits and bring them to justice.

Officials from the forest department and Rescue 1122 confirmed that fires in Shamshi Khan, Kamrani Talash, and Kaladak Maidan were brought under control after three days of operations.

They said several suspects had been taken into custody.

Divisional forest officer Shabbir Jan said wildfires had also affected forests in Khanpur, Osakai, Tarnao, Asbanr, Baghkandai, Ramyal Ghazo, Badwan, and Kotigram, but were now largely contained.

Mohammad Israr, a local journalist, alleged the fires might be part of a conspiracy, and urged stronger forest protection measures, particularly on privately owned land.

Officials of Rescue 1122, the forest and wildlife departments, civil defence, levies, and local volunteers took part in the operations to put out the fires. Firebreaks were also used to prevent the spread.

“Those responsible will face strict legal consequences,” Mr Jan said, adding the community must assist in protecting the forests and environment in the district.
