ATTOCK, May 5: Social circles have demanded that the district administration should launch a drive to check unregistered vehicles plying illegally on the roads with ‘applied for’ plates.

Expressing their concern over the issue they said the district administration and police should take action against such vehicles particularly motorbikes.

They said it was not only the worst law violation but also becoming a serious security problem, therefore the law enforcing agencies should take the issue seriously.

People observed that the number of vehicles plying without proper registration was increasing.

The lack of enforcement of existing laws of excise and traffic, and the inefficiency of the concerned departments has encouraged vehicle owners to avoid registration, they said.

Such vehicles had become status symbol and people also used ‘applied for’ plates because they thought it would increase the sale value of their vehicles. Moreover, it was also a way to avoid paying taxes and registration fee, they added.

But law abiding citizens were worried about the deteriorating situation - the increasingnumber of unregistered vehicles had become a serious security problem, they said and added, there was no way to trace such vehicles involved in any crime.

Besides, concentrating on checking the situation the government should ensure to introduce computerised registration at Attock like other districts, the local people demanded.

Such a system would also be helpful for the law enforcing agencies to trace stolen, tempered and vehicles with fake registration numbers, they added.
