DESPITE all the big talk about climate change, global warming, etc., it is regretful that whenever some new project is launched to protect the environment, it inevitably ends up in the destruction of greenbelts and chopping down of fully grown trees.
The same has happened in the case of a huge fleet of electric buses launched recently by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in the name of protecting the environment by eliminating pollution from fossil fuels, and promoting public transport.
As such, the CDA has unbelievably cut down a huge strip of greenbelt along the Srinagar Highway till around the roundabout near Zero Point interchange and H-8 graveyard. This has been done to construct a depot for these electric buses.
It is incomprehensible why a perfect greenbelt had to be eliminated in violation of the master plan instead of using some other land for the purpose.
Ironically, this unfortunate location was a CDA tree plantation site. I wonder if this is our indifferent attitude towards the environment, what is the point of having useless seminars on climate change.
