GB reservations

GILGIT-Baltistan (GB) is a region where no issue or problem can be resolved by the state without mass agitation, road blockades and frequent sit-ins. This is highly unfortunate despite a kind of sensitivity and centre of attention this region has acquired against the backdrop of some geopolitical developments.

The people of Diamer district have been protesting against the construction of a dam without addressing their concerns. The state has reneged on its erstwhile promises regarding resettlement of affected families and compensation for their lands.

While this mega project may prove to be a watershed moment for water and energy sustainability which is a dire need at this juncture, the rights of indigenous community surrounding the dam site should not be trampled.

The people of GB are the major stake-holders in the project, but there was no representation of the people of GB when the project was finalised. Now, adding insult to injury, the government does not seem to be serious about handling some 30,000 local people of Diamer who are likely to be affected.

Their lands and homes are going to be submerged owing to the said project. Besides, the ecological repercussions the already climate vulnerable and affected region will face is even a more grave apprehension.

The people of GB never oppose and impede any developmental project. What they protest against is the lack of any mechanism to address the catastrophic consequences of such mega projects. This is a purely justifiable concern that needs to be addressed urgently. The people of GB cannot compromise on blatant land-snatching.

The state must prioritise people’s demands over developmental goals. The authorities concerned should swiftly fulfil the promises that they had made.
