ATTOCK, April 27: Serious rifts have surfaced between the Attock tehsil naib nazim Sheikh Mehmood Elahi and union council Attock-1 nazim Malik Tahir Awan, Dawn has learnt.
A tug of war has been going on between the two since the local government elections due to their personal and political disputes despite their affiliation with the Major Group of the district nazim.
Recently, the situation further worsened when Mr Elahi, who is also the naib nazim of UC Attock-1, along with his uncle Sheikh Farman Elahi, a councillor, accused Mr Awan of unfairly distributing subsidised wheat flour and sugar besides committing other financial irregularities, at the inaugural ceremony of the UC building.
They said the nazim’s personal driver had been employed as a sanitary worker in the UC. Similarly, the nazim was also awarding his favourites violating the rules and regulations of the local bodies ordinance, they alleged.
They also asked Mr Awan to resign from his seat and re-contest election.
Both the parties on the occasion also exchanged harsh words against each other. Afterwards, Mr Elahi, his uncle along with some councillors walked out from the ceremony threatening that they would raise the issue before the group leader and district nazim Tahir Sadik Khan.
Later, nine UC councillors submitted a complaint to the district nazim against the naib tehsil nazim and his uncle stating that their undue interference, aggressive and irresponsible attitude could not be tolerated further as they had started to level baseless allegations against the nazim.
They said if the two did not change their attitude, a no- confidence motion would be moved against both of them.
Interestingly, UC councillors belonging to the opposition parties, particularly Jamaat-i-Islami, have joined hands with the naib tehsil nazim over the issue.
However, the situation has created great concern for the group’s leader as both belong to the same political wing.
