To secure Pakistan’s future in the face of growing climate change impacts, it is imperative to adopt a multi-stakeholder approach to tackling climate and sustainability challenges, with corporations and the private sector playing an active part. Bayer is committed to exactly this. Through its core businesses in agriculture and healthcare, the company focuses on driving sustainable development and generating positive social impact.

Bayer’s global mission, “Health for All, Hunger for None” places sustainability at its core and climate change considerations are embedded in the company’s overall business strategy.

Bayer’s global sustainability commitments

Bayer has set itself ambitious global sustainability targets to be achieved by 2030, which include supporting vulnerable or marginalised communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to build their economic capacity and improve public health.

One such target is supporting 100 million smallholder farmers with products, services and partnerships, enabling them to produce more to feed growing populations. Additionally, Bayer aims to support 100 million women in LMICs with access to modern contraception to support women’s health alongside economic and social empowerment.

Bayer’s sustainability strategy also focuses on reducing the company’s ecological footprint, with mid- and long-term targets. By 2030, they aim to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 and 2) and GHG emissions across the value chain (Scope 3). By 2050, Bayer is committed to achieving net zero GHG emissions, including the entire value chain.

How do these sustainability targets translate in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, Bayer’s focus is on regenerative agriculture to increase the capacity of smallholder farmers, enabling greater yields while protecting scarce resources. Through decades of research and development (R&D), Bayer provides farmers with innovative agricultural solutions to reduce the impact of climate change on crops, such as drought-resistant seed varieties. To help protect and maximise yields, they offer advanced crop protection products and high-yielding hybrid maize seeds, which have been successfully used in Pakistan for decades.

Bayer also works on community engagement initiatives to increase the resilience of communities against climate change impacts. In Pakistan, following the devastating monsoon floods of 2022, Bayer stepped in to support 600 flood-affected smallholder farmers with interest-free microloans to enable them to rebuild their livelihoods.

Furthermore, to enhance climate resilience among farmers, the Bayer Foundation has recently announced a collaboration to provide insurance coverage for 10 million smallholder farmers working with national governments in Asian and African countries including Pakistan. By adopting solar power across Bayer Pakistan’s Crop Science division, the company supports its global commitment to enhancing energy efficiency and reducing emissions.

On the healthcare front, Bayer works to constantly engage and educate healthcare professionals on its latest research including outcomes of clinical trials, which support the adoption of best practices and the highest standards of patient care.

Contraceptive access remains an important area of focus for Bayer, as is women’s health in general. They particularly focus on addressing commonly under-diagnosed conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), which affect women’s daily lives and productivity.

It is with this clear focus on addressing the most pressing sustainability-related challenges that Bayer intends to move toward a future where “Health for All, Hunger for None” truly becomes a reality for Pakistan.
