ACCORDING to a recent report in the Times of Israel (Dec 18, 2024), nearly two million Israelis lived below the poverty line in 2023, including 872,000 children and 158,500 senior citizens. A vast number of Israelis are struggling for mere survival, while billions of dollars are being funnelled into expanding arsenals and waging wars by the Zionist state.

This disturbing reality starkly contrasts with Israel’s image as one of the world’s most advanced and militarily powerful nations. The relentless focus on military adventurism, invasions and regional incursions into Gaza, Lebanon and Syria has drained Israel’s precious resources that could have been gainfully utilised for uplifting the lot of the vulnerable Israelis.

The heart-wrenching photograph accompanying the Times of Israel report (reproduced here), showing a homeless person sleeping on the streets of occupied Jerusalem, was a stark reminder of how Israel is pursuing misplaced priorities. The plight of Israeli people is a powerful reminder that wars and militarism do not solve problems; they exacerbate diffi-culties and multiply complications. History provides compelling examples of how peace yields far greater dividends than war.

By prioritising peace and the welfare of its own people, Israel can set a worth-emulating example for the entire region. True security does not stem from walls, weapons or warplanes; it arises from the wellbeing of the people.

A nation that invests in its people builds a stronger, more resilient society. The choice is clear. The time is now.
