MEDICAL COLLEGES

MEDICAL COLLEGES: Medical education is a dream of many students. However, due to limited number of seats in public medical colleges and exorbitant fee of private colleges, this dream fails to realise for a majority of them. Medical education has become a profit-able business. The yearly fee in private medical colleges ranges between Rs2.2 million to Rs3 million, adding up to well over Rs10 million for the five-year degree programme. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) should design strict policies regarding fee structure of private medical colleges, and increase the number of seats in public colleges.

MEDICAL UNIVERSITY: The absence of a medical university in Ghotki district has forced aspiring medical students to seek education in distant cities, adding to their financial and emotional burden. Furthermore, the lack of locally trained healthcare professionals exacerbates the healthcare crisis in the region, leaving many communities underserved. As such, establishing a medical univer- sity in Ghotki would provide accessible education to local students, and improve the deteriorating quality of healthcare in the district by producing a new crop of skilled medical professionals.

RECLAIMING ROAD: The road next to the Civil Secretariat in Lahore has been used as a parking area by lawyers for years. While the Punjab government has taken action against encroachment in the city, nothing has been done to clear this road. Pathetically, during office hours, two lanes on each side of the road are completely occupied by the vehicles of lawyers as well as their clients. Unfor-tunately, the issue has been left unadd-ressed for long. The government must reclaim the area and provide sufficient parking space for lawyers and the people who visit the local courts. If it cannot fulfil this duty, then demolishing the encroachments of common people is nothing but a superficial activity.
