WORKPLACE SAFETY

Published January 17, 2025

WORKPLACE SAFETY: This is with reference to the editorial ‘Safety at work’ (Dec 31) which highlighted a very important subject, and gave a strong message to the management of Pakistani industries. The world has learnt lessons from the industrial disaster in India’s Union Carbide plant 40 years ago, and greatly improved safety rules and regulations. In Pakistan, the industries need to understand that workplace productivity and workers’ safety are correlated, and are dependent on rules, regulations, procedures and compliance. With strong systems and procedures, industries can improve safety and increase productivity and efficiency.

BAHAWALPUR ROADS: The crumbling road network of Bahawalpur disrupts daily life and destroys the city’s image. The potholes, uneven surfaces and inadequate drainage on Circular Road make it nearly impassable during the rainy season. Similarly, Airport Road remains in an alarming state of disrepair. Another pressing concern is the poor condition of University Road which poses serious safety risks to commuters. Fawara Chowk Road also suffers from severe congestion and neglect, adversely impacting businesses and commuters. It is essential for the authorities to repair, expand and modernise these roads to ease traffic congestion, reduce accidents, and support the city’s economic growth.

DUSTBINS across KARACHI: The streets of Karachi and piles of garbage seem to go together. This is not because the people lack a sense of cleanliness, but because the city lacks dustbins. It is unfair to point fingers at the people when the infrastructure to support cleanliness simply does not exist. Strategically placing bins in markets, parks and residential neighbourhoods can work wonders. This initiative must go hand in hand with regular waste collection to ensure that these bins serve their purpose effectively.
