KARACHI: Dr Mahmud Husain, Deputy Foreign Minister, said in Parliament yesterday [Jan 12] that the Pakistan Government have taken a serious view of the threats made at the All-India Hindu Mahasabha meeting held in Calcutta in December last year.

He added that the Pakistan Government have asked the Government of India to take appropriate action against the organisation as it had been decided in the inter-Dominion agreement that “any propaganda for the amalgamation of Pakistan and India or of portions thereof, including East Pakistan ... shall be discouraged.”

Afghanistan was also charged of violating the “gentleman’s agreement” to refrain from propaganda against Pakistan … . . …

[Meanwhile,] Karachi is fast developing the looks of a free-port, you can get any amount of foreign currency but, of course, at a ‘fancy price,’ and a variety of ‘duty-free’ goods in various shopping centres of the capital. … “Pakistani rupee for dollar, sterling or Indian rupee; quick exchange; no forms, no declarations,” thus shout the money-changers at the very gates of the State Bank of Pakistan … and the Office of the Assistant Controller, Foreign Exchange.
