Nato and beyond

Published September 6, 2024

THIS is with reference to the article ‘75 years of Nato’ (July 21) and the letter ‘Double standards’ (July 22). After the reunification of Germany and dissolution of Warsaw Pact, there was hardly any justification for Nato to exist. German reunification could not have taken place without support from Russia. At the time, if it demanded that there should not be any further expansion of Nato, it would have been a reasonable request. If this point was discussed, but no commit- ment was made, it amounts to betrayal of a country and disregarding its security concerns.

When in early 2022, it was widely rumoured that Russia is going to attack Ukraine, at least France and Germany should have stepped forward to calm down Russian nerves. Germany, the main beneficiary of reunification, and France have historically held independent positions despite American domination of Nato.

Luckily, the war has not exploded into more sinister dimensions. However, in the event it does, many countries in Europe will face trouble. But Russia, with its vast land mass and geography, will survive. The history of Europe over the last 250 years tells us that any country that tried to destroy Russia got itself in trouble. Europe will do well to remember this significant piece of history.

As far as the letter by the Russian ambassador is concerned, indeed one cannot help appreciating his stance on this ‘avoidable’ war. One point, however, needs deeper analysis and consideration. Ukraine was part of Russia for almost 70 years. There would certainly be friends of Russia in Ukraine. Perhaps, a peaceful path could be found to make the leadership in Ukraine realise that leaning too much towards the West would not only be a costly affair, but also a detrimental step that will harm the interest of both the countries.
