GUJRANWALA, Feb 4: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) notified on Monday sacking of 64 employees on charges of corruption and irregularities.
These employees were recruited in 1991 and 1992 on daily wages. Their service was regularized in 1997. Later, an inspection team of PTCL headquarters, Islamabad, scrutinized the cases of these employees. The team said in its report submitted to the authorities that these employees were recruited on bogus documents and they were involved in corruption. The team recommended that they should be sacked.
The PTCL authorities deregularized the service of these employees in 1999 and held an inquiry against them. Later, they were sacked in the light of the inquiry report.
Meanwhile, the employees strongly protested over their sacking. They alleged that many senior officers of the PTCL had recruited their sons and other close relatives some few years ago while they have been sacked on false charges.
They demanded that an impartial inquiry should be conducted regarding the recruitment of the sons and relatives of senior officers.
They alleged that many corrupt officers, who had been issued show cause notices for corruption and irregularities, have been promoted while daily wagers have been sacked.
ROBBERIES: The house of another former deputy mayor of Gujranwala was looted on Monday.
Robbers also took away a four-wheeler after snatching gold jewellery from women in another strike.
Three armed men sneaked into the house of former deputy mayor Haji Saifuddin Bhatti in Civil Line. They locked the inmates in a room, collected 50 tola gold jewellery, Rs5,600, other valuables and fled.
Four men on a four-wheeler with no registration number plate intercepted Pervaiz Ismail and his family on GT Road near Sadhoki. They dragged them out of their car (GAL 8410), snatched cash and gold jewellery and also drove away with the car.
Police are investigating.
