IN recent times, there have been a number of reports and instances highlighting misuse of power, unjust actions as well as corrupt practices by police personnel. These incidents not only tarnish the image and reputation of the police force, but also undermine the rule of law and the foundational principles of justice and fairness in society. Not only do police officials overstep their legal boundaries, their engagement is ethically, morally and professionally reprehensible.

Unsurprisingly, widespread lawlessness and corruption within the police force across the country is a reality that has become more visible with the passage of time. The very institutions entrusted with upholding law and order as well as preventing criminal activities are, regrettably, often the root cause of corruption and disorder. This erodes public trust, undermines the rule of law, and fosters an environment where criminal activities thrive unchecked.

As such, the cumulative effect of gr- owing lawlessness and corruption has led to widespread public discontent and grievances. Citizens feel helpless and frustrated when those meant to protect them become the perpetrators of injustice. The disconnect between the police and the public is detrimental to the social fabric and can lead to increased civil unrest.

There must be a system of stringent accountability in place. Also, an effective policing system must be introduced that genuinely serves and protects, and is rooted in principles of justice, fairness and accountability. Nothing else will work.
