KARACHI, Feb 4: The newly-constituted Provincial Local Government Commission held its introductory meeting here on Monday with Dewan Muhammad Yousuf Farooqui, minister for local government, labour and transport, in the chair.

The commission, formed under Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2001, comprises Prof. Assadullah Qazi, Vice Chancellor Irsa University, Hyderabad, Karim Iqbal, ex-federal secretary and Yaqoob Zaidi of Karachi University.

Speaking at the meeting, Dewan Yousuf, chairman of the commission, said the commission would conduct annual and special inspections of the local governments and submit reports to the chief executive of the province.

The commission will also conduct on its own initiative or whenever so directed by the chief executive, an inquiry by itself or through district government into any matter concerning a local government, he informed the members.

It is also empowered to initiate a special audit by itself or direct a district government to arrange a special audit of any local government, resolve disputes.—PPI
