LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan has yet again sent a notice to the Punjab chief secretary and local government secretary over delay in the holding of local government elections in the province.

The Election Commission has asked both officers to appear in person on August 20.

The Punjab government has prepared the Punjab Local Government Act 2024 that has been vetted by the law department. The government is now preparing to put up the draft before the cabinet for its approval before tabling it in the Punjab Assembly for legislation.

In the notice, the ECP stated that the Punjab government had requested the commission to allow three to four weeks time for finalization of draft PLGA 2024 and in the meanwhile the ongoing process of delimitation of union councils be withheld.

The commission says the Punjab government was allowed to withhold the delimitation process and complete the legislation within one month as no further extension will be allowed. “Now after expiry of four weeks time, no response has been received from your side,” the ECP observed.
