LONDON, Feb 4: The youngest survivor of the Titanic celebrated her 90th birthday at the weekend, with a party for friends and family and an orchestra to play her favourite tunes, according to a British press report on Monday.
“I hired a small orchestra to play ‘The Sound of Music’ all evening,” said Millvina Dean, who lives near Southampton, said the report in The Daily Telegraph. “Everyone said it was the best party they had been to in a long time.”
Dean was nine weeks old when the Titanic sank on April 12, 1912, and is one of only four survivors still alive. Dean’s mother and brother also survived, but her father died.
“My brother and I were lying in bed,” she told the London paper. “There was a loud crash and my father went to see what happened. The ship had hit the iceberg and he ran back down and told my mother, ‘Get the children out of bed.’ My mother never saw him again. They carried me to one of the lifeboats in a sack. I was so small, they couldn’t hold me.”—dpa
