STRANGE NAMES

STRANGE NAMES: On a social media platform, I recently came across someone who was looking for a job, but was getting none. Call it whatever you like, but it is hard to find the mainstream corporate sector responding to an applicant with such a postal address. There are dozens of localities in Karachi with inappropriate or strange names, such as Geeder Colony, Bhens Colony, Machar Colony, Golimar, Nagan Chowrangi and many others. People residing in these localities should have the names of these colonies and areas changed through their elected representatives in the provincial assembly.

TANKER MAFIA: Sir Winston Churchill was initially not in favour of granting independence to the subcontinent. He once expressed that if freedom was given to the people of the subcontinent, they would even sell water and air. After seven or so decades of independence, we are trying to prove him right with the water tanker mafia doing a roaring business in Karachi, minting billions of rupees. Local, provincial and federal governments have miserably failed to do anything in this regard. It is more a failure of intention than action.

BURDEN ON TAXPAYERS: This is with reference to the letter ‘Spendthrift PCB’ (July 10). The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has become a huge burden on the taxpayers. Unfortunately, there have been instances of misuse of taxpayers’ money and lack of transparency within the board and players. Poor management within the PCB affects the broader economic contributions of cricket to Pakistan, such as tourism, job creation and related businesses. Moreover, the government should consider some sort of a public-private partnership to run the affairs of the PCB. Improving the management as well as functioning of the PCB can enhance its financial health and reduce any indirect financial burden on the already hard-pressed taxpayers.
