ISLAMABAD: Release of radioactivity has been detected in Pakistan as a result of recent underground nuclear explosion carried [out] by India in the bordering state of Rajasthan at a distance of about 40 miles from the Pakistan border, says a Press release of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) issued here today [June 16]. The release of radioactivity, a violation of the partial test ban treaty (1963), has been established by the PAEC scientists who were despatched to different parts of the country immediately after the explosion for this purpose.
Samples of airborne dust, soil, water and vegetation were collected and tested for radioactivity. Further analysis of the fall-out is in progress. India had earlier claimed that the nuclear explosion was “clean” and that there was “no radioactive fall-out” ...
[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Damascus,] Syria and the United States ... resumed full diplomatic relations after a seven-year break. Before leaving Damascus, Mr Nixon said he had invited President Assad to visit the United States ... and the Syrian leader had accepted the invitation.
