LAKKI MARWAT: Residents of Wanda Seemo area held a demonstration in the Lakki Marwat city on Friday against the killing of cattle by a mortar shell fired by the security forces.

The protesters reached the urban locality in vehicles and gathered at the Kargil Chowk, placing the dead animals on the Tajazai-Darra Tang Road.

The main artery remained closed for nearly five hours, causing severe traffic jam and troubling transporters and commuters in hot weather.

The protesters’ representatives said that a mortar shell fired by security forces targeting militant hideouts in the mountainous terrain struck a house in the village, killing cattle.

They said they assembled in Lakki city to lodge a complaint with the government functionaries for the losses they suffered.

An elder said on Thursday night, a mortar shell hit a house in the village, killing two cows and injuring a camel.

They also demanded payment of compensation to the families of four villagers, who had been killed in an intelligence-based operation against militants in October last year.

Political and social activists, including Maulana Ahmad Shah Quraishi, Naseer Turab, Misbahullah, Imranullah Begukhel and others, also visited the protesters to express solidarity with them.

Later, a government team headed by assistant commissioner Yasir Nazir held negotiations with the protesters and persuaded them to open the busy road.
