SAHIWAL, March 18: People staged a protest demonstration against police violence and injured two constables in a clash on Saturday. City police station SHO Inspector Asif Kamal stopped Sajid and Usman who were riding on an unregistered motorcycle. The SHO exchanged hot words with them during the checking of the papers of the motorcycle and constables escorting him started beating the youth. They beat them so mercilessly that passersby and shopkeepers of the area got enraged and they locked the SHO in a room.
His force ran away from the scene and radioed an SOS. Within a short time force from all police stations rushed to the spot.
Grain Market SHO Shafqat Kamboh waved his pistol in the air and hurled threats at the people and shopkeepers. They subjected them to torture and released Inspector Asif.
Their violence against people sparked clashes in which two constables Iqbal and Raza sustained injuries.
After police violence, the shopkeepers went on strike and closed their shops.
The Anjuman-i-Tajran demanded transfer of the city SHO within 24 hours and his suspension from services. They threatened that they would go on complete strike if their demand was not met.
NO RESIGNATIONS: The MMA and united opposition would not tender resignations instead would force the rulers to quit.
This was stated by MMA deputy secretary general Hafiz Husain Ahmad at a press conference at the residence of Abdul Razzaq Mujahid.
The Hafiz said the united opposition unanimously demand restoration of constitutional status as on October 12, 1999, reject Gen Pervez Musharraf either in uniform or as president and establishment of an independent election commission.
He expressed his concern that if President Gen Musharraf did not resign, the existence of the country would be put in danger.
He said the government started action in Balochistan to please the US. Now it was spreading the news of escape of Nawab Akbar Bugti to Iran to give Americans an excuse to attack the country.
