KARACHI, March 12: The columns of the elevated Lyari Expressway were constructed at several bridges posing threat to commuters in the metropolis.

A survey conducted by Dawn shows that the Lyari Expressway is being constructed from Mauripur to the Super Highway with two interchanges – one at Gharibabad and the other at Pak Colony. The Lyari Expressway is being constructed over the existing bridges built on the Lyari River.

The columns in the middle of the Manghopir Bridge, connecting Pak Colony with Garden, were constructed narrowing the road and posing threat to motorists, particularly in the absence of streetlights.

Experts say that the columns of the expressway could be moved away from the existing bridges as no where in the world the columns were built in middle of roads.

Columns have also been erected on Yasinabad Bridge, connecting Azizabad with Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Sohrab Goth Bridge, and plans are there to build columns on the Teen Hatti Bridge connecting Jamshed Quarters with Liaquatabad.

The construction of columns will lead to disruption in traffic flow causing routine jams on the affected bridges.
