HYDERABAD, Feb 24: On a call of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, a protest day was observed throughout Sindh on Friday against publication of blasphemous cartoons in European newspapers and police violence on protesters in Lahore and Islamabad.
Activists of the MMA and other political parties took out processions and held rallies, demanding that the government should sever diplomatic relations with countries where the sacrilegious caricatures had been published and ban import of their goods.
In Hyderabad, activists of the MMA, PPP and other organizations held a protest rally outside the Madina mosque in Seroghat after Juma prayers.
Speaking on the occasion, MMA leader Sahibzada Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair said Muslims could bear all miseries and tolerate excesses but they would sacrifice their lives to protect the honour of Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
District MMA president Maulana Abdul Waheed Qureshi vowed to hold protest rallies in Hyderabad on March 3. He warned the government not to create any hurdles in the way of the rallies.
Speaking at a Jamaat-i-Islami rally in Latifabad, Shaikh Shaukat Ali demanded that the offending editors should be handed over to Pakistan.
He condemned firing and shelling on protesters in Lahore and Islamabad.
The Islami Jamiat-i-Tulaba also held a rally.
The Hyderabad Shia Rabita Council observed a protest day against the blasphemous cartoons and attacks on shrines in Iraq.
The Anjuman-i-Ghulam-i-Abu Talib, Anjuman-i-Jaan Nisar-i-Abbas and other Shia organizations also held rallies which were attended by MMA and PPP workers.
TANDO MUHAMMAD KHAN: People of the district, led by district MMA president Maulvi Mohammad Ibrahim Soomro and district PASBAN president Mohammad Aslam Hyderi, marched from the Al-Mehran chowk to the press club.
Later, they blocked the Phulelli Road for two hours.
SUKKUR: Under the aegis of the Imamia Students Organization, Shia Action Committee and the Asgharia Organization, people took out a procession here against the blasphemous cartoons and bombardment on shrines in Iraq.
The procession started from the Haideri mosque, Old Sukkur, and after marching through main roads of the city reached the press club.
NAWABSHAH: A black day was observed in the district and MMA activists held a protest demonstration at the Liaquat chowk.
They demanded immediate release of arrested workers of the alliance.
They also condemned attacks on shrines in Iraq.
The protesters vowed to observe strike on March 3.
A shutter-down strike was observed in 60-Miles and a rally was taken our in the area.
Activists of the Shia Ulema Council and the Imamia Students Organizations also took out a procession from Murtazvi imambargah which ended at the Shiraz chowk. Another procession was also taken out from an imambargah in the Qazi Ahmad town.
KHAIRPUR: Jamaat Ahl-i-Sunnat workers out a procession from the Luqman madressah and after marching through different roads of the city and reached the Panj Gulla chowk.
BADIN: Activists of religious parties took out a procession in the district.
The procession started from the Qatar mosque after Juma prayers and reached the Kazia Wah chowk.
SHIKARPUR: Activists of the Jamaat-i-Islami and the Ahl-i-Sunnat Wal Jamaat held rallies here.
