KARACHI, Feb 17: The Decentralization Support Programme (DSP) is arranging a 4-days training workshop for the newly elected district nazims to be held from Feb 20 to 23. The training will be held at a local hotel in Karachi.

The programme in question had carried out capacity building of the first generation of the elected representatives in 2004 and the feed back of the exercise was very positive. The inaugural session will be chaired by the Sindh chief minister, whereas the certificate distribution is expected to be done by the Sindh governor.

Sindh advisers on finance and local government will also be invited at the training.

Government officials have also been invited to the training programme, so that they could interact with the nazims. These include provincial secretary finance, secretary local government, and others.

The module developed for the purpose of imparting this 4-day training is a result of months of preparation by the Asian Development Bank’s team of experts, PPSO offices and capacity development consultants.

An effort has been made to keep the module focused and rooted to the ground realities. The module repeatedly refers to the SLGO on all important issues and gives examples of the best practices from around the world.

In the coming weeks, the DSP will arrange similar training workshops for all the town/taluka nazims, naib nazims and councillors. It is expected that about 3,500 elected officials will be trained through these workshops.—PPI
