PEAK HOURS

PEAK HOURS: The increased tariff during peak hours is primarily meant to dissuade consumers from using heavy appliances unless necessary. However, most consumers, especially business and industry, cannot stop work even during peak hours as it would cause loss of production and man-hours. K-Electric (KE) may have to generate additional energy during peak hours, but the cost of generating additional electricity is the same per unit. It would, therefore, be fair if the additional revenue earned during peak hours is returned to the consumers in the form of low tariff during off-peak hours. They need to be considerably lower than what happens to be the case currently.

FLYOVER ISSUES: A private housing society had started work on the construction of a flyover from Qalandria Chowk to Naya Nazimabad some two years ago, and the construction has been going on at a rather slow pace since then. This has caused a number of issues to the residents of North Nazimabad, impeding their routine commute to and from the area. With construction going overhead, the road beneath is in a pathetic condition, and the piles of garbage lining the path only add to the woes of commuters. The authorities should look into the issue forthwith.

WELCOME STEP: Establishing a central library for its students by the University of Peshawar is a step that deserves due appreciation.

The library has a biometric entry process, and has desktop computers as well as air conditioners. However, the library currently has only two discussion booths and they do not have fans installed in them. Also, the chairs are rather old and uncomfortable. Finally, the timings of the library need to be increased from 11 to 13 hours every day, from 11am to 9pm.
