Why the elections?

Published September 15, 2023

THE country currently has three major political parties that have over the years had the chance to run the country. Did any of them actually do something during their tenures to ameliorate the lot of the masses? Hardly. All one got to hear was that everything bad was due to the actions taken, or not taken, in the past. None of them ever explained why they wanted to ride a ‘dead horse’ with no resuscitation recipe in hand.

In the next general elections, whenever they are held, one of these three parties, or any combination of them, will become eligible to rule Pakistan once again. Would anyone employ a black-listed construction company to build one’s personal house? No. But we will do the same even if we do not realise the folly of our actions.

On their part, the parties have done nothing to deserve another chance. They have not even pretended to learn from their mistakes. All we hear coming from them is the mere rhetoric that they will set everything right despite the odds.

The situation suggests there is no need to waste the already strained finances of the country on holding general elections, which are guaranteed to take the nation back to square one.
