ISLAMABAD: A 6.0 magnitude earthquake jolted the federal capital and northern parts of the country on Sunday morning.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre Islamabad, the origin of the quake was the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border with 223km depth.

The tremors were felt around 10:52am in Islamabad, Peshawar, Swa­bi, Swat, Haripur, Mala­kand, Abbottabad, Man­sehra, Mardan, Khan­pur, Battagram, Muzaffarabad, Taxlia, Pind Dadan Khan, Pasroor, Chinab Nagar and other cities.

People rushed out of their homes and gathered in the open ground while reciting the kalma.

No loss of life or property has been reported so far.

According to the US Geological Survey, the tremors were also felt in Afghanistan and parts of India, including the capital New Delhi.

Earlier in March, at least two people were killed and six injured as a 6.8 magnitude earthquake jolted parts of the country. The epicentre was the Hindu Kush region.

The deaths took place in KP where roofs, walls and houses collapsed as a result of the tremors.
