GUJRANWALA, Jan 31: The requirement for a university degree has made ineligible about two dozen former members of assemblies from Gujranwala, including two federal ministers.

The politicians now plan to field their sons or close relatives in the general election.

Those barred from contesting the polls include former federal ministers Ghulam Dastgir Khan and Bishop Rufin Julius, former MNAs Khwaja Muhammad Aslam Lone and Asad Raza Pervez, former MPAs Abdur Rauf Mughal, Zafarullah Cheema, Muhammad Yousuf Bhinder, Ghulam Farid, Abdur Rahman Gujjar, Pervez Virk, Mehr Muhammad Saleem, former adviser to chief minister Mian Azhar Hasan Dar, former mayor Muhammad Aslam Butt, PPP city president Chaudhery Khalid Humayun, general secretary Lala Muhammad Idris, Ghulam Sarwer Ansari, Khalid Aziz Lone and Saoodul Hasan Dar.

However, former provincial ministers Barrister Usman Ibrahim, Chaudhary Muhammad Iqbal Gujjar and Azam Cheema, former MNAs Chaudhary Mahmood Bashir Virk, Chaudhary Abdullah Virk, former senator Muhammad Anwar Bhinder, former MPAs SA Hamid, Rana Shamshad Ahmad, Imtiaz Safdar Warriach, Shahid Akram Bhinder, Chaudhary Zahid Pervez, Sardar Tariq Raza and City tehsil Naib Nazim Ehsanullah Chaudhary are eligible to contest.

TWO KILLED: Two persons were killed in separate road accidents in and around the city on Thursday.

Iqra was run over by an oil-tanker along the Hafizabad Road.

Ladheywala police have registered a case.

A college professor, Abdul Khaliq, of Daska was killed in a collision between a car and a tractor-trolley near Sambryal on Wazirabad Road.

SLAUGHTERED: A man was slaughtered and later set on fire by unidentified assailants in Ladheywala Warraich village on Thursday.

Police recovered the burnt body from a field and removed it to the DHQ Hospital for autopsy.

The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained.

SHOT DEAD: A landlord was shot dead allegedly by his rivals over a land dispute in Chak Ramdas on Thursday.

Riaz was going to Wahando when Latif, Siddiq, Hanif, Allah Ditta and Mahmood shot him dead and escaped.

ARREST WARRANTS: The Banking Court No. 1 on Thursday issued arrest warrants for seven heavyweight defaulters.

These defaulters, including industrialists, owe Rs2 million to various bank branches.

The court also issued a show-cause notice to two police officials for not attending the court in connection with their evidence despite summons.
