Designer Maheen Khan is returning her Lux Style awards in solidarity with victims of abuse

"I had hopes that LSAs would be not just a champion of style but a platform that nurtured justice," she wrote on Instagram.

This is not a good year for the Lux Style Awards. Designer Maheen Khan has joined director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy and announced that she will be returning her awards in support of victims of domestic violence.

Khan, a giant in the fashion industry, posted a note on Instagram calling out the awards for not being a platform that “nurture[s] justice”.

“In a world where one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual assault, where rape and domestic abuse remains unaddressed, it is imperative that those who have a voice must use it,” read the caption of a picture posted Sunday night.

“Physical abuse against women and girls is a human rights violation. Today it is someone’s daughter, tomorrow it might be yours. While so many of us have raised our voices against the deaths of Zainab, Noor and others, the disregard and insensitivity of a recent award show is a travesty,” she said.

“In all conscience I can no longer associate my self with an event that disregards their plight. I will be returning my Lux Style Awards in solidarity with those who continue to suffer the infringement of their basic human right to live free from violence.

“It is a sad day as I had such hopes for the Lux Style Award show to be not just a champion of style but a platform that nurtured justice for women and stood out as a proud beacon of hope for every child and woman who has been violated,” read the caption.

The LSAs are no stranger to controversy but this year, the awards were overshadowed by one nomination — that of Feroze Khan, who has been accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife Aliza Sultan. His nomination — and subsequent win — for Best Actor (Viewer’s Choice), left many people enraged. Obaid Chinoy announced prior to the show that she was returning her lifetime award over his nomination and social media was awash with criticism of the LSAs.

In response, the organisers said their hands were tied as “respecting the freedom and diversity of audience views, [they do] not regulate or limit engagement (except in cases of content with obscene or inappropriate language) on our social media platforms.”

While domestic voilence is a dispicable act, I would not jump to conclusions in a knee jerk reaction. But what I really admire is that how all the ladies close ranks to protect one of their own. Unilever will eventually be forced to issue an apology statement, Feroze Khan will not be able to find work in the industry and Alizeh will have her revenge. Welcome to showbiz!

Stupidity is at its hight, never seen such things here in the west. Feroz Khan is only accused, and accused by one against one. Let the court decide first before you start throwing away your awards. Go by the law instead of acting on reportings. Don't be a an accuser' advocate and a judge at the same time.

When you parade around a person's picture on whom no allegation is proven, and a certain section of the society starts canceling them, what space there is for justice to take its course?

Justice? What about fairness and transparency of the nominee selection process? I don't care either way about that actor being nominated or not, but these arguments are silly. An event prides itself on the transparency of its viewers choice nominations, yet people keep asking it to intervene in that process. Nothing wrong in returning the awards as a means of personal protest, however (one has the right to protest anything they want) but please make the argument for protest clear. Such events cannot be "beacons of justice and hope".

@oldhabibian what you are admiring is the notion that a media trial and guilty-before-verdict should be supported. Hopefully you don't pay a similar price in any field.

Men should stop marrying. It is so depressing, how these women are turning into vindictive monsters not just against men but their children too. The psychological and emotional abuse they bestow upon their husbands by depriving their children of their father's love is not mentioned any where but once a husband reacts. Claiming to be an abuse victim is the easiest way to get attention these days and most of these woman count on it.

@Shahid lot of abuse in the “west”. But not like in Pakistan that it should not be reported or mentioned “kay log kaya kahain gay”. Always hiding & covering up vices in our culture, homes & families so instead of victim blaming ; discuss them & find solutions. That’s how civil society works.
